EXPECTATIONS
General Member Expectations
Membership
Your membership lasts a full year from the date you make payment. That day becomes your renewal anniversary, so please renew on or before each anniversary date. Membership continues automatically until you let us know in writing that you’d like to resign.
Community service
Council provide us with a minimal lease, and in return we’re asked to give back by supporting our community. Every member plays an important role in meeting this obligation, whether it’s sharing in maintaining the facilities and machines or by helping on community projects
Personal financial Gain
In accordance with our Constitution as an Incorporated Society, charitable status, and Council lease obligations, members are reminded that Shed facilities must not be used for personal financial gain.
Conduct
Let’s keep our Shed safe and welcoming! Please respect one another, enjoy food and drink only in the lunch room or outdoor area, and remember, no smoking, drugs, or alcohol. Misconduct will be managed under the Three Strikes Rule
Health and Safety
Our health and safety rules are explained in detail during the Health and Safety SOP induction program. These guidelines are in place for everyone’s benefit and must be taken seriously to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all
Materials and Consumables
Your membership includes access to a wide range of basic consumable materials. To help support the shed’s finances and ensure that our more valuable timbers are used sparingly and with appreciation, these timbers will carry a KOHA donation, and discuss with Don - Woodworking Manager or Neal - Engineering Manager before using.
Member Expectations
The Shed is a community group which runs as a cooperative, rather than a service and, as such, Shed Members are required to share the work maintaining the facilities.
To achieve this, we aim to provide different opportunities so Members can contribute their time to fit in with their personal commitments. We regularly display jobs that need doing in our reception and we encourage Members to talk with the Duty Manager about these. Look out too for our next ‘working bee’.
Support with maintaining the facilities and giving consideration to others helps us to build a happy, productive and safe Shed community. Please therefore remember to:
work cooperatively and consider the effects you may be imposing on others, such as sound, dust and access
spend time helping to maintain and care for our equipment and facilities as if they were their own
be tidy and respect the work of others in maintaining the workshop areas
work safely by using safety equipment and following the safety guidelines
To ensure a safe working environment for everyone
You must be a current Member of the Shed to use the equipment
Before access to the shed is allowed members must undertake assessments on the fixed plant such as drill presses, and other equipment such as sanders and routers. Assessments are offered for members to attend on the last Saturday of each month at 9am.
You must have been inducted into the workshop by Module one of the Assessment program.
There must be a minimum of two members on site at all times and a duty manager must be present during hours of operation and have access to a phone.
Use PPE - eye protection (must be worn at all times whilst in any of the workshops to reduce the risk of being struck by flying debris), ear muffs, enclosed footwear is mandatory etc, in the workshop when operating machinery at all times.
If you are unfamiliar with machinery ask the Duty Manager and he/she will personally help, or he/she will direct you to someone who can
If you see someone using machinery in an unsafe way tell them to stop and advise the Duty Manager. Let's keep everyone safe!
Report any damage or accident to the Duty Manager or Workshop Manager immediately and record in the incident register. We're not looking to blame and shame, we can't fix what we don't know so it is important for any incidents to be raised for this reason.
Don’t eat or drink outside the lunch or office areas (you are welcome to use the outside settings).
Smoking is not allowed anywhere in or around the Shed.
Members must not operate equipment under the influence of drugs including alcohol.
